DESCRIPTION

Born and raised in Tuckasegee, North Carolina, my sister, brother and I did not know we were poor. We had all we needed with faith, family and love; however, having monetary means was certainly a mystery, so store-bought items came few and far between. Here is the story of life in the mountains for three isolated children and how one of them made her very first and only doll.

EXCERPT

Oh, I wanted a doll in the worst way! Even though I was 10 years old, I had never had a doll. I longed for one because on holidays when our cousins came to visit, they would bring their dolls. Some dolls were made out of old clothes, or corn shucks. Some cousins even had  store-bought dolls.
I was old enough  to know if I was to have a doll, I  would have to make it myself.  One day I was out in the  garden, hoeing, while this longing  for a doll rambled around in my  head. What was I going to use for  a doll? Deep in thought, I stopped  hoeing, and looked around at the  forest surrounding me, gazing  with full intent when . . . my gaze  suddenly fell upon tall green  leaves at the edge of the garden  . . . and there she was! I knew it  just as soon as I saw her!  She was fat and yellow!
Gazing at her, I could see she was dirty from the way the rain had patted on her! I gathered her up in my arms and held her so tight, I could hear her heart beating in my ears . . . boom, boom, boom! I took the tail of my dress and rubbed the dirt from her yellow body, shining her up.
Oh, I thought, she needs a face! So I ran to the washpot, and chose a burnt stick, then drew a face on her  yellow skin with the charcoaled end.  She always had a smile on her face, cuz I did! Then I got to worrying about her bald head! I ran over to the grapevines near the edge of the garden, and broke off curly red tendrils and tied them around her head with a string! She had the curliest red hair you ever saw! It stuck out all over!
Then I found a piece of blanket from the rag box, and wrapped her up! My doll had come to me from the earth and meant so much to me!
